Balanced twisted-pair copper has a fixed channel limit, and Texas sites routinely exceed it. Fiber also carries no current, so it creates no bonding path between separated structures and is unaffected by the electromagnetic noise that surrounds heavy equipment.

Gulf Coast conditions change how outside plant is built

Heat, humidity and hurricane exposure belong in the cable specification, not in a change order after the first storm. Outside plant runs on the Texas coast are normally water-blocked and pulled through conduit or innerduct rather than direct-buried where flooding is a real risk. Entrance points need the transition from outside plant cable to riser-rated cable handled within the distance the code allows, any metallic strength member or armor bonded, and splice enclosures and powered equipment set above known water levels. Pull tension, slack storage and bend radius are all harder to hold in July heat, which makes sequencing a scheduling question as much as an installation one.

Termination, splicing and test records

  • Single-mode or multimode selected on distance, the optics actually in service, and expected lifecycle
  • Fusion splicing, and pre-terminated assemblies where they lower field risk
  • Enclosures, cassettes, patch panels and labeling that matches the as-built record
  • Insertion loss testing on every strand, with OTDR traces on longer or spliced spans
  • Strand assignment documentation, so the next phase does not begin with guesswork
