Duty cycle is the first Texas decision
The gate size an operator can move is only half of the selection. The other half is how often it moves, and under what conditions. A Houston Ship Channel industrial entrance passing tanker and contractor traffic through a shift change, or a distribution yard off I-45 cycling trucks most of the day, imposes a duty cycle that a light commercial operator will not survive. Gulf Coast heat compounds it: a unit working hard in direct sun in August has far less thermal headroom than the same unit in a shaded interior lane.
Hydraulic swing operators are frequently the better answer for heavy leaves and continuous traffic, while electromechanical units suit lighter gates and moderate cycles. We size from measured field conditions, not from a nameplate maximum: leaf weight and length, travel, hinge and post condition, wind exposure, and the real vehicle count at the busiest hour.
Coastal corrosion and enclosure life
Salt-laden humidity along the Gulf reaches well inland. Enclosure rating, hardware finish, grounding and surge protection deserve explicit attention on coastal and near-coastal sites, as do the mounting and drainage details that keep standing water away from an operator base after heavy rain. Hurricane exposure adds two further requirements: a documented manual release procedure, and a defined plan for how the entrance operates on generator or battery power when utility service is lost.
Barriers and bollards for controlled entry
Not every Texas vehicle entrance needs a gate leaf. Barrier arms manage throughput where the objective is traffic control and credential capture rather than perimeter closure, which fits employee lots on Texas Medical Center campuses, structured parking and truck check-in lanes. Automatic bollards suit openings that must stay walkable while remaining closed to vehicles, including plaza edges and service drives. Each family carries a different safety profile and a different set of acceptance tests.
Safety obligations come before access control
A powered gate is a moving machine. Entrapment protection, monitored safety devices covering every direction of travel, warning signage, guarded openings and emergency access are the installing team’s responsibility under UL 325 and ASTM F2200. Credentials, intercom entry and access control command a gate that is already safe. They cannot correct unsafe geometry or missing protection, and a controls upgrade on a gate with unresolved mechanical problems is not an upgrade.
