Why DC drive matters here

Plenty of Texas vehicle entrances sit a long way from a convenient power source: the far corner of a Houston-area industrial tract, a laydown yard at the edge of a petrochemical property, a rural distribution site where the drive is several hundred feet from the nearest service point. Trenching a new branch circuit across that distance can cost more than the operator it feeds. A DC operator draws considerably less current, can be supported from a smaller supply, and on suitable sites can be charged by solar, which removes the trenching line item from the budget entirely.

Battery backup also reshapes the outage conversation. Gulf Coast hurricane season and the storm-driven outages around it can leave a property without utility power for an extended stretch. A DC operator with a healthy battery keeps cycling the gate through that window rather than forcing every vehicle through a manual release, which matters most at sites that still need to move trucks while the grid is down.

Heat is the limit on battery life

The tradeoff is worth stating plainly. Sustained high ambient temperature shortens backup battery service life, and Texas supplies a great deal of it. A battery sized against mild-climate assumptions will not deliver the same number of cycles from a west-facing enclosure in August. Enclosure placement, shading, ventilation and a realistic replacement interval belong in the design and in the maintenance plan, not in a surprise service call three summers later.

Retrofit onto an existing gate

Viking operators are often installed on gates that already exist, which makes the mechanical survey the decisive step. An operator cannot fix a gate that binds, sags or rolls on failed hardware. It will only fail faster than the gate does, and usually at the worst moment. Before any operator is quoted we verify leaf weight and length, track and roller condition, hinges, posts and positive stops, ground clearance and drainage, and whether the gate itself meets the construction requirements of ASTM F2200.

Safety and acceptance

UL 325 requires monitored entrapment protection appropriate to the installation and covering each direction of travel, along with warning signage, guarded openings and a defined emergency access method. Those obligations sit with the installing team and are settled before any credential, intercom or access control device is connected. Acceptance testing demonstrates the workflow under realistic conditions:

  • Every monitored entrapment device tested in each required direction
  • Gate cycled on battery to confirm usable backup capacity
  • Solar charging verified against actual site exposure where used
  • Loop and presence behavior observed with representative vehicles
  • Manual release, emergency access and maintenance intervals documented
